As an alternative to Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol that incurs heavy control overhead, many efforts have been pursued to enable Wireless Collision Detection (WCD) in WLAN systems. Although it was shown that CSMA with perfect WCD could lead to a tremendous growth in achievable system throughput, actual WCD performances will highly depend on wireless channel fading effects. Hence, we analytically derive the achievable system throughput taking into account imperfect WCD incurred by the fading nature of wireless channels, and provide the actual throughput gains that can be expected from CSMA with imperfect WCD over conventional random access protocols.
