Air pollution has put so much mercury in waterways that the best advice is not to eat certain large fish. Is there a solution? Eleven years ago, Connecticut conducted its first tests of mercury in large freshwater fish. The findings were sobering. Unhealthy amounts of mercury, from air pollution, had taken up residence in the larger fish. Anglers would have to mark on the calendar how often they could eat their catches. The studies and news about mercury in the last decade suggest that this metallicelement continues to increase in sediments and water because of the presence of mercury vapor in air pollution. Connecticut today is one of 45 states with official warnings against mercury in fish.
