Agroecological evaluation of the productivity of perennial fodder crops.

Results are reported from a 2-year study in Penza province, Russia, of the biology, persistence, root nodulation, DM and green fodder yields, metabolizable energy content and fodder unit production of the perennial fodder crops eastern goat's rue [Galega orientalis], hybrid lucerne [Medicago], red clover [Trifolium pratense], yellow melilot [Melilotus officinalis] and awnless brome grass [Bromus inermis]. Best results were obtained from the eastern goat's rue. This species also had beneficial effects on the structure of the chernozem soil, with good accumulation of root mass in the top 30 cm layer.
