Whichever way you look at it, whether it's a couple of lithium powered solar racers catching fire in Australia (see the report on page 41) or the much over-told story of a couple of Chevy Volts going up in smoke after crash testing. Lithium PR is not doing itself a lot of favours.And even if conventional cars go up in smoke in the USA at the rate of about 30 an hour every day, an electric car catching fire is perhaps misguidedly news, in a nation where what really matters to people is what happens in their own backyard.
