In the 5pring 2015 issue of BEST, I explained how the future of lead-acid batteries in SLI applications could prove challenging when faced with the new requirements for stop-start applications. I outlined the new stop-start standard testing procedures introduced in Europe: I explained the reasons for the poor charge acceptance in lead-acid batteries and showed test results for PbC (lead carbon) batteries using highly polarisable activated carbon negative electrodes. This article expands on the first article focusing on the problems of trying to combine carbon and lead in the negative electrode.
