Classic Li-ion batteries (LIBs) contain an electrolyte solution comprised of LiPP dissolved in organic carbonates, with a plethora of additives designed to facilitate solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation (thus lengthening cell life), increase rate capability, enhance low temperature performance, provide over-voltage protection, and reduce or eliminate flammability. This mix is costly and moisture-sensitive: it is the second-most expensive LIB component (after the cathode material), and requires vacuum loading during cell assembly.
