It is quite remarkable how one technology's development is totally dependent on another's advance. While this piece is mainly aboutthe lithium-ion battery, to fully understand battery's popularity, we must go back in history to the invention and development of the transistor. Throughout their history the lightning fast advances of one have always been overshadowed by safety and performance issues of the other.The transistor was invented by Bardeen, Brattain and Shockley at Bell Laboratories in 1945. The first commercial application of the transistor, was in a hearing aid made by Raytheon in the mid 1950's. The Integrated Circuit (IC) was invented by Kilby at Texas Instruments in 1958 and almost simultaneously by Noyce, at Fairchild.
