On the Shapes and Colors of the Atayal Tribe's Textiles: The Case of Taroko Group's Traditional Costumes

This research samples the Atayal Tribe Taroko Group textiles, and through descriptions, figures, and comparison, seeks to interpret the stripe patterns and color expressions of these textiles. This paper approaches the relations and characteristics among the embroidery structure, design, and colors from the perspective of plane constitution design. The Taroko multilayered stripes feature rhombus-shaped patterns, mortar-shaped patterns, and mountain-shaped patterns. These mostly use a unitary structure with respect to shape structure category. The crossed stripes are mostly used as the basic stripe shape. The researchers have discovered that there remains a certain form of similarity among the basic stripe shapes, and their forms have some basic systematic concepts. The color expressions of the Taroko embroidery artifacts mainly use black, white, red, green, blue, etc. in order to build a basic color pattern. In most cases, one color applies only to one basic color pattern, though along with different color arrangements from multilayered stripes.
