By Concrete Products records, Concrete Technology set a new single-piece girder length record for a state department of transportation in May 2011, shipping eight 205 ft. WF100G beams 45 minutes north to Seattle. They best by 10 ft. beams used on a prior record-holder—a 2010 Utah Department of Transportation project (Interstate 15 & Beck Street, page 32)—and are part of a structure replacing a cast-in-place concrete viaduct whose design does not meet current standards for seismic activity.The milestone is no accident: Concrete Tech completed eight contracts with pre-cast/prestressed girders in the 175- to 185-ft. range prior to the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement, enlisting Seattle hauler V. Van Dyke Inc. on one audacious delivery mission after another. The producer's biggest end user/customer, the Washington State Department of Transportation, has adopted higher strength concrete mix specifications and strand patterns to enable the Wide Flange 100G beam for bridge spans in the 195- to 240-ft. range.
