An American Concrete Institute Concrete Innovations Appraisal Service panel concludes that Ipanex, a mineral admixture from Philadelphia-based IPA Systems, enhances concrete service life by protecting reinforcement from corrosion. A CIAS report finds the admixture to "significantly reduce the permeability of concrete and make it more resistant to water and chloride ion ingress." Research entailed a review of long-term field studies incorporating Ipanex, all of which were found installations to be in good condition compared to (undosed-mix) control structures, IPA officials note. The report backs up findings from ongoing Penn State University research, which has examined the mechanism by which Ipanex performs. IPA describes Ipanex as a complex alkaline earth silicate admixture that chemically reacts with Portland cement to improve the physical and chemical properties of concrete in all stages of development.
