Lulin Atmospheric Background Station: A New High-Elevation Baseline Station in Taiwan

Taiwan is located in the downwind side of both East Asia and Southeast Asia, which are major air pollutant source regions in the world. As a result, a new high-elevation baseline station, Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (LABS), was constructed to study the trans-boundary transport of air pollutants and its impact on Taiwan. Official operation of the new station began on April 13, 2006. Between April 13, 2006 and July 31, 2007, the overall mean concentrations of CO, O3, PM10, and gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) were 91 ppb, 29 ppb, 10 μg m~(-3), and 1.63 ng m~(-3), respectively. Seasonal variation in pollutant concentrations was evident with higher concentrations usually observed between fall and spring when air masses were more or less under the influence of Asian continent. The seasonal patterns in transport path of air masses matched the variation of pollutant concentrations, demonstrating the importance of regional and long-range transport.
