DESIGN ENGINEER REVISITS GLADESVILLE BRIDGE FIVE DECADES ON

Using a computer the size of a room was how Tony Gee as a young British engineer designed the Gladesville Bridge more than 50 years ago. Now an octogenarian, Tony Gee recently paid a special visit to the structure that connects Sydney suburbs Drummoyne and Gladesville and forms part of a major transit corridor for that part of the city. The Gladesville Bridge, the first 1000 ft (305 m) concrete span in the world, replaced a low-level two-lane iron truss bridge built in 1881 and was opened on 2 October 1964.
