Non-destructive testing (NDT) was first to develop and establish engineering testing specifications, codes and standards, especially in safety critical sectors. While traditional NDT methods dominated, the early developments of acoustic emission (AE) and infrared thermography (IRT) began to gain acceptance - especially in the military sector. These methods were later incorporated into standards such as EN473 and ISO 9712 and guideline documents like IEAE 628 and SNT-TC-1A - all of which are concerned with qualification and certification of personnel. Vibration Analysis (VA) is also found within documents like SNT-TC-1A and ISO 9712.
