The authors of this article explain how experimental models are useful for gaining a deeper understanding of a machine's behaviour, in particular under operating conditions where data are hard to be obtain. In doing so, these models can be used to improve monitoring and diagnostics. The first installment, which was published in the May 2009 issue of the newsletter, looked at virtual models of rotating machines, and dealt with both bending and torsional vibration analysis. The second part, which appears here, covers the simulation of a chain transmission and also provides details of modal analysis of virtual models.
