Experiments using 1/6-scale models wereconducted on earthquake-damaged RC piers on the Kobe mule ofthe Hanshin Expressway to confirm that various proposed retrofitmethods can attain the intended high deformation capacity of over5 #delta#_y The retrofit methods compared were steel platejacketing, RC jacketing, a combination of steel and RC jacketing,and the reconstruction of RC piers. Nonlinear RC analysis wasalso carried out using a fiber model to allow a quantitativeevaluation of the strengthening effect of these methods.Both experimental and analytical results demonstrated that all fourretrofit methods can achieve a large ductility increase wellexceeding the level demanded by the Specifications for HighwayBridges. It was also found that post-installed anchors, which aredriven in to unify the pier with the footing, would not be a weakpoint under earthquake loading.
