Polish provisions, limiting the emissions of harmful substances to the atmosphere, were introduced firstly in 1990 and significantly modified in 1998. Some of the consequences of these changes are presented in the paper. Polish utility power industry is the main supplier of common pollutants to the atmosphere. Because of the concentration of the largest sources in small number of high capacity plants, the activities in this sector determine up to date in great part the national emission, success of the national air protection programmes and meeting the international obligations. The effects of the hitherto existing provisions for the utility power industry are estimated.
