GOING THE THIRD WAY: Developing Custom Software Solutions for Your Library

It is not uncommon for librarians to find themselves trapped between two options when seeking to create a new online service or extension of an existing service. The first involves appealing to a communications department or to central IT, most often to modify or build out the institutionwide CMS to satisfy some library need. The second involves seeking a solution from an outside vendor-most often a library-oriented vendor-or making due with a free consumertargeted service such as Google apps.
