In the USA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is evaluating what it describes as an advanced sensing technology, based on fibre optics, which could help engineers develop ways of actively controlling the shape of an aircraft's wing. According to NASA, controlling a wing's shape during flight would allow it to take advantage of aerodynamics and improve overall aircraft efficiency.
