Due to the triple issues of shortage of available final disposal capacities, ever-increasing taxation targets for industrial waste, and movement toward recycling oriented industries, soil treatment faces a turning point from conventional landfill waste disposal to in-situ treatment. Although ground-water cleaning is performed throughout the country, Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) for Groundwater Contamination are very difficult to satisfy. Thus, many of the treatment plants are operating for long periods as they struggle to clean up groundwater as close as possible to EQS. Rapid cleaning of pollution sources is also strongly required in view of reducing risk to human bodies. This paper describes hybrid, i.e. thermal, biological and chemical, in-situ clean-up technologies for soil and groundwater contaminated with organic compounds and organic chlorine compounds. The description includes an overview of technologies, results of treatability studies, course of technology selection, construction method, state of cleaning operation, and result of monitoring, based on actual clean-up cases for contaminated site.
