David Locker died in hospital in Toronto on 22nd April 2010. He had been ill with liver disease for several months.David was born in Derbyshire and gained his BDS (Distinction) from Charles Clifford Dental School Sheffield, a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Services Management in Leeds and a PhD in Sociology at the University of Kent. His PhD thesis was published as a book Disability and Disadvantage which illustrated the way in which chronic illness disturbs everyday life. This book is a seminal work on chronic illness and many of the ideas in it formed the basis of his approach to disability and oral health.
