A novel frequency response (FR) method is proposed: (i) Partial pressures of reactants in a steady-flow reactor is perturbed sinusoidally by varying gas space of the reactor with a definite angular frequency w; (ii) amplitude and phase shift of every partial-pressure variation of both reactants and products is measured over a wide range of w; (iii) on the other hand, characteristic functions of w to explain" reaction-rate spectra" obtained from the data in (ii) are deduced analytically on the basis of a reaction mechanism; and (iv) various rate constants involved in the function are determined by numerical simulation for the FR data. The FR method is applied to a carbon monoxide oxidation over Pt/Al 3 O 2 at 623 K and ca. 50 Pa; 16 rate coefficients have been determined successfully.
