Laser-Induced Transformation of Gold Nanoparticles and Its Applications

Pulsed-laser light irradiation of dodecanethiol (DT) -passivated gold nanoparticles in cyclohexane resulted in enormous size growth of the particles. At the same time, spherical gold nanoparticles were tightly deposited on the laser irradiated area of a transparent substrate immersed into the colloidal gold solution. The size of the deposited nanoparticles depended on the type of the thiol molecules adsorbed on the gold particles as well as the irradiation conditions. Partial replacement of DT by 1, 6-hexanedithiol resulted in the deposition of much larger particles. The deposition of the particles could be achieved even in a porous materials such as a membrane filter. Subsequent nonelectrolytic copper plating of the deposited site was successful. The deposited particles function as seeds for the plating.
