Energy efficient syngas production by catalytic gasification of wood biomass at low temperature

Catalyst development for catalytic gasification of biomass at low temperature using cellulose as a model compound of biomass has been carried out. We found that Rh/CeO_2/SiO_2 exhibited very high performance. We have tested the performance Rh/CeO_2/SiO_2 catalyst for the gasification of real biomass. From the comparison of the catalyst with conventional methods (non-catalyst, dolomite, steam reforming nickel catalyst), Rh/CeO_2/SiO_2 gave much higher C-conversion to gas, higher syngas yield, and lower coke yield than other methods. It is very interesting that tar yield was almost zero. The catalyst exhibited much higher cold gas efficiency than conventional methods. We have also carried out the life test of the catalyst, and it is found that it was very stable during about 4-h reaction.
