The role of antimicrobials in companion animal dentistry.

Veterinarians are faced with myriad medical decisions, including what tests to order, what the diagnosis is (based on clinical and laboratory findings), and how to treat diseases presented to us. Periodontal disease is the most common companion animal physical examination abnormality. During the oral assessment, treatment, and prevention visit, the decision about antibiotic use is frequently considered. This paper presents advice on making this decision, along with four cases in which the choice of antibiotic was crucial in managing the corresponding periodontal problems.
