Orbifloxacin (Orbax, Schering-Plough) is a synthetic, broad-spectrum fluoro-quinolone antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections in dogs and cats. Orbifloxacin is a concentration-dependent bactericidal agent. It acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (type 2 topoisomerase), thereby preventing DNA supercoiling and synthesis. When administered orally to dogs and cats, Orbifloxacin has an approximate bioavail-ability of 100%. Peak plasma concentrations usually occur within 1 hour of administration. No formal studies have examined the effects of concomitant feeding and administration of Orbifloxacin. However, when fluoroquinolones are ingested with food, the time to maximal plasma concentration is generally delayed, but the maximal concentration of Orbifloxacin achieved in plasma is not affected by concomitant food ingestion. Care must be exercised when administering Orbifloxacin with products that contain divalent or trivalent cations (i.e., Fe~(3+), AP, Ca~(2+), Mg~(2+), Zn~(2+)), which can bind to and inhibit the absorption of fluoroquinolones.
