Treatment and Supportive Care of Recumbent Horses

Clinical management of recumbent horses varies depending on the etiology of recumbency, general nature and training of the horse, and environmental setting. Therefore, independent of primary disease, certain management strategies should be followed tominimize the risk of potential complicating factors. The goal of this article is to focus on consistent case management, emphasizing the prevention of complicating factors. Generalizations have been provided to cover the vast array of diseases that canresult in equine recumbency. In addition, when appropriate, examples of specific diseases have been included for illustrative purposes.
