Chemotherapy safety in veterinary practice: Hazardous drug administration

Increasing numbers of veterinarians now provide chemotherapy for their cancer patients. Certain chemotherapy drugs cause catastrophic tissue damage if extravasated, and most of these drugs are potentially lethal if overdosed; therefore, extra precautions are necessary when providing chemotherapy in practice. As with any hazardous drug preparation, personal protection equipment and proper drug-handling techniques can minimize employee exposure to hazardous drugs during chemotherapy administration.
