Diagnostic technique facilitates timing and condition monitoring of circuit breakers

This article describes an instrument and a technique which replaces routine 'trip testing' with a fast and straightforward but a more informative profile test. It facilitates the timing and condition monitoring of circuit breakers at all voltages. The authors, Robin Watson from UK company Kelman Ltd, Bjorn Holm of BC Hydro, Canada, and Albert Pondes of Essent Netwerkfacilities BV, The Netherlands, summarise their companies' experience of using this instrument. They also show how it has been used to facilitate new maintenance policies in various utilities.
