X-ray and thermodynamical measures have shown that nucleic acids are inhomogeneous in their structural angles and local energy distributions. These local variations seem to modulate the efficiency and accuracy of chromosome duplication and ribosome translation, implying a rather smooth fitness landscape associated to these 'internal selection' constraints. Regularities are found which are the basis of an algorithm useful in the localization of important gene domains. They also suggest restrictions on the genetic code which are found in nature. These internal selection constraints can be formalized in a 'cell division automata', which can be used in order to model the evolution of genetic sequences.
