The plan and results concerning diesel emission in the first step of the Japan Clean Air Program (JCAP) are reported. In the first step of JCAP, 7 vehicles and 7 engines were tested with 5 fuels in a testing step know as the "existing step".Compared with base fuel, one of the fuels showed 32 to 57% reduction in PM emissions for 6 vehicles in the Japanese 10-15 mode test, though one vehicle showed a 3 % increase. The fuel showed 10 to 28% reduction in PM for 5 engines, though 2 enginesshowed very little change. The effect of fuel properties on the NOx emission seemed to be smaller than the effect on the PM emissions. Other additional plans in the first step of JCAP concerning diesel emission are the so called "model step" and "engine oil test", which are also described briefly.
