This paper describes a driver's workload caused by a vocal interface carnavigation system. A vocal interface navigation systems are expected to reduce the driver's workeload as compared with manual interface systems in actual driving situations. However, it is not clear what range is acceptable for effective vocal interface. Therefore, we conducted experiments to clarify the effects of the number of voiced words and their recognition rates by the vocal interface on driving performance. The results indicated that a driving performance was reduced with increased total operation time, based on the number of vocalized words. In addition, we also discussed the available index for evaluating the driver's workload caused by using a vocal interface car-navigation system.
