Eighteen flavonoids isolated from polyol-soluble licorice extract,Glycyrrhiza glabra origin,were evaluated for the antimicrobial activity.The most active flavonoids,glabridin exhibited MICs of 6.25 approx 12.5 mu g/mL against Gram-positive bacteria and 12.5 approx 25 mu g/mL against yeasts.The synergistic effect was found in the combination of polyol-soluble licorice extract and green tea extract.Saponins isolated from the pericarps of Sapindus mukurossi were very effective against several dermatophytes.Crude saponin fraction of Sapindus mukurossi showed a significant activity on the yeasts,Candida albicans and Malassezia furfur,and was effective against Propionibacterium acnes.
