SST-12V(B) seeders used for sugarbeet sowing are gradually replaced by more advanced pneumatic seeders in Russia. The main advantage the new seeders provide is increased sowing precision. However SST12V(B) seeders provide stable quality and are mechanically reliable. A study on increasing sowing precision of SST12V(B) was conducted in All-Russian Research Institute of Sugarbeet and Sugar, Russia. Data on dimensional characteristics of seed fractions and cells of sowing discs, effect of sowing disc rotation speed and cell size on sowing precision are tabulated. The authors conclude that the combinations of seeder speeds and cell parameters calculated will allow sowing precision rates of 86-88% to be obtained, which represents an improvement of 6% over conventional seeders and approaches the precision levels of pneumatic seeders (92-94%).
