Structure of ecological niche and geographical distribution of northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe, Turdinae, Passeriformes) [Russian]

The behavior and ecology of the northern wheatears was studied in various parts of its geographical range (the Kola Peninsula, Central Russia, the Northern Caucasus). A significant similarity in the foraging behavior and distribution of their microhabitats were found in birds from all the study areas. These two parameters were supposed to be the most important niche characteristics of northern wheatears. The structure of the ground surface in lowlands corresponds to the species-specific behavioral and habitual preferences of the birds. All this permits these bird species to expand their geographical distribution beyond the areas of their coexistence with other wheatear species in and mountains and occupy vast lowland territories of the Earth.
