Cutaneous glands of mammals - heterogeneous group of organs (a concept of secretory cell morphotype)

A concept of secretory cell morphotype is proposed based on long-tern studies and analyzing the current advances in cell biology. A morphotype is suggested as a secretory cell of a particular specialization (differentiation status), that is revealed according to selected morphological criteria. Specialization of the secretory cell manifests itself in its capability for synthesizing and secreting chemical substances and is related to organization of cell biosynthetic conveyor. The variety of types in secretory cells is based on respective modifications of their biosynthetic apparatus. Application of the concept reveals that in mammals cells of cutaneous glands of different localization are referred to different morphotypes. The glands themselves are a heterogeneous group of organs.
