Chronic lung diseases such as asthma are characterized by persistent inflammation and re-modelling, which contribute to the decline in lung function with disease progression [1]. Inhaled corticosteroids are the only chronic anti-inflammatory treatment that have efficacy in asthma and, apart from leukotriene antagonists introduced in the 1990s, there has not been a single new anti-inflammatory medicine to treat asthma since the introduction of inhaled corticosteroids many years ago [2]. New anti-inflammatory agents are needed to treat poorly controlled disease, to modify the course of the disease (current therapies only improve the symptoms), and should preferably be oral as patients prefer oral therapy compared with inhalation [2].
