Active video delivery for a large-scale video archival and retrieval system

Network support is essential to provide a quality multimedia presentation for a large-scale video archival and retrieval system. In this work, we propose an efficient video delivery method based on the concept of Active Networks, for a multiple thumbnail video digest display system that we have been developing to solve two problems: half of the users stopped their requests near the beginning of the video playback, and a large amount of time was consumed for retrieving a video. In our approach, the video server load can be reduced by around 40%, and the total delay of receiving the group of videos, that clients using such an archival and retrieval system would experience, can also be reduced significantly.
