This paper presents a new network service architecture for creating a user-customized network environment. So far connectivity and reliability have been regarded as a main SLA in a current network, and various kinds of user requirements have not been able to be sufficiently handled due to limited equipment functionality for a per-user customization. To solve this problem, we propose Multi-Layer DNS which extends current DNS to enable to customize per-user network environment based on such contextual information as users' attributes and service providers' policies. DNS is used as a base protocol because of its flexibility and scalability (i.e., a flexible name binding from application specific information to network level control and a scalable distributed server architecture).The proposed Multi-Layer DNS provides two remarkable functionalities: (i) per-user customized name resolution by cooperating with user authentication system and (ii) per-user configuration of routers/switches' routing table. ML-DNS server prototype is also developed to evaluate its performance, especially its detailed implementation technique which significantly reduces the overhead of proposed per-user customized name resolution.
