A Study on the Architectural Design of the Environmental Ground Station System for GEO-KOMPSAT-2B

The GEO-KOMPSAT-2B is a satellite whose main mission is to measure and monitor the Earth environmental conditions and ocean color imaging on the geostationary orbit. The spacecraft of the GEO-KOMPSAT-2B is being developed by the KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) to be launched in 2018. The environmental payload system (GEMS: Geostationary Environmental Monitoring System) of the GEO-KOMPSAT-2B is also being co-developed by the Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp of the U.S and the KARI. The Environmental Ground Station System (EGSS) which is the GEMS image reception and processing system is architected to be divided into seven subsystems as follows: Antenna Subsystem (AnS), Satellite Data Receiving Subsystem (SIRS), Satellite Data Process Subsystem (SIPS), Satellite Information Management Subsystem (SIMS), Satellite Information Exchange Subsystem (SIES). Satellite Information Service Subsystem (SISS), and Complex Operation Control Subsystem (COCS). The main goal of this design is to provide the capability of expandability, maintainability, and operability of the EGSS for the GEO-KOMPSAT-2B. The factors that define the architectural design along with the key design features will be presented in this paper.
