An Adaptive FEC Assignment Scheme for Motion JPEG2000 Transmission Over Wireless Network

In this paper, an FEC (Forward Error Correction) scheme for Motion JPEG2000 is proposed. While most existing unequal error protection code assignment schemes are based on trial-and-error iterations, which are computationally intensive and thus not suitable for real-time applications, the proposed scheme uses the slope of the Rate-Distortion curve to choose the code for each quality layer. The FEC code for the first layer is chosen so that the probability of error in the layer is limited to a given permissible range. Comparison with conventional schemes demonstrates that the proposed scheme attains at the same time higher PSNR and more stable image quality in high bit error rate environments.
