Balancing security and privacy: an examination of American universities' policy statements

摘要

The purpose of this article is describe the possible ethical norms in the information society by examining documents which describe policies or principles on the use of computers or network resources on campus in the United States. The analysis from the perspective of information ethics reveals the attitudes at the American universities towards the relationship between the concepts of privacy and security. Special attention is paid to the problem of anonymity. In this article, the analysis is confined to the attitudes taken by the universities, with practical ethical proposals as future agenda.
