Aggregate packets for STM calls in a PON as an access network converging the public network and the internet

This paper discusses a PON (Passive Optical Network) as an access network allowing a convergence of the public network and the Internet. A packet-based network is considered to be the next generation network, since it is suitable for the data communications like the Internet. However, the STM-based transportation is still required for the real time communications. This paper proposes an aggregate packet transportation that is used for the STM traffic between ONU (Optical Network) and OLT (Optical Network Terminal) on a PON. The information on a boundary of the aggregate packet is exchanged with the common channel signaling system, and the timing of the change of slot allocation in the aggregate packet is notified with low layer link protocol. Error correcting procedure of the signaling system can keep from the bit error damage, and low layer conversation allows the rigid timing control over the change of aggregate packet. It also permits low overhead for the control.
