Characterization of fine ceramics powder -- standardization for international standards and pre-standardization

Activities of standardization of characterization (measurement methods of powder properties) of Fine Ceramics Powder were surveyed. The list of proposal items was discussed by the technical committee for standardization (EC-3: Powder, Process andChemical properties) in Japan Fine Ceramics Association from the view point of "Early-Stage Standardization". Each item is surveying by the committee of feasibility study for standardization of testing and evaluating methods of new materials for electricpower instead of oil, the draft of JIS is discussed by another committee.In the international standardizing activity, the first plenary meeting of ISO/TC 206 was held in Tokyo, the title, the scope, new work item proposals, the organization structure and liaison were discussed. In new work item proposals, 4 items, including"-determination of particle size distribution (sample preparation)", were adopted, 4 working groups have started each operation. Two new proposals, including "Specific surface area of ceramic powders", were adopted at the second meeting in Malaysia, eachworking groups have started operation.As another activity of "Early-stage standardization", I want to introduce the project of an IEA ANNEX II entitled, "Implementing Agreement for a Program of Research and Development of High Temperature Materials for Automotive Engines", from the view point of pre-standardization. In this program, "Development and Testing of Procedures for Characterization of Ceramic Powders" is studied since 1986. Concurrently, if nations could come together to survey methods, agree in principle on the measurementtechnology, and at the same time, initiate individual national standards research based on the technology, the time to reach international consensus could be shortened significantly.
