Fe-5mass%Mg alloy powders were prepared by mechanical alloying and compacted by spark plasma sintering. The alloy particles by mechanical alloying were glossy scales, and lamellar layers of iron and magnesium were observed in the cross section.The sintered material of the powder exhibited high density, as the sintering temperature was elevated. A body sintered at 873K was satisfactory. At sintering temperatures higher than 873K, the magnesium content in the sintered material decreased, becausemagnesium easily evaporated under vacuum. Lamellar layers in the powder was maintained even after sintering.
