摘要

The decomposed granite soil and the sandy volcanic Soil which range widely in Japan, and classified into typical problem soil. It is cited as a major reason that the soil particles are brittle, so a particle breakage phenomenon is caused by application of an external force. Relating to the deformation and failure of the natural ground composed of this kind of unusual soils, it is essential of all things to verify the effect of the particle breakage on the shear behavior. Accordingly, in this investigation a biaxial compression test was carried out along with visual observations using cylindrical steel rod and chalk rod of the same size, and they were compared and examined in detail. Consequently, the remarkable differences of the shear mechanism between rigid and crushable materials, that is, the differences of shear band formation due to the particle breakage, the stress-strain-volume change relationship were verified objectively.
