Calcium hydroxyapatite growth on cellulose fibers phosphorylated was studied. Phosphorylated cellulose fibers were soaked in a saturated Ca(OH){sub}2 solution at ambient temperature, which leads to the formation of thin coatings consistingpossibly of calcium deficient apatite by partial hydrolysis of the PO{sub}4 functionalities in the phosphorylated cellulose fibers. They are believed to act as nucleation layers for further calcium phosphate deposition when the fibers are subsequentlysoaked in 1.5xSBF. Ca:P ratio of the coatings formed on the Ca(OH){sub}2-treated cellulose fibers phosphorylated increases with the increase of soaking time. The products obtained by soaking in 1.5xSBF solution for over 10 days indicated a compositioncorresponding to hydroxyapatite (Ca:P=1.67).
