Recently, it is necessary to improve the work environment in the cast house. Borax-based-flux used ofvertical continuous casting of copper alloys are useful to improve the environment in the cast housecompared to "the lamp black", commonly used powder flux in vertical continuous casting of copper. The entrainment of this molten flux into the cast slab causes the casting defects. Entrainmentphenomenon of this molten flux in the continuous casting was investigated by newly industrial scalewater-model experiment using two kinds of liquid (water and oil). The rate of kinematic viscositybetween water and oil is agreed with copper melt and molten flux. Entrainment phenomenon wasaffect by kinematic viscosity of oil and the velocity of liquid. Two mechanism was observed. Manyparticles of oil were entrained in case of low kinematic viscosity and high velocity of fluid at theboundary. Lumps of oil were entrained in case of too high kinenatic viscosity. Several kinds of fluxes, having equivalent viscosity at water-model experiment, were examined in the actual slab casting andinclusion defects in the strip were checked. Entrainment phenomenon of flux is same as that of oil. This newly water - model experiment was useful for solution of entrainment phenomenon.
