Virtual showcases presenting European cultural heritage

Intuitive access to information in habitual environments is a major challenge in information technology. An important question is how established and well-functioning everyday environments can be enhanced by rather than replaced with virtual environments. Augmented reality (AR) technology has a lot of potential in this respect since it allows to bring the information into real world environments by augmenting them with computer generated images. Traditional head-mounted AR displays, however, present many shortcomes with respect to unencumbered use, thus preventing the systems from being seamlessly integrated with habitual environments. The Virtual Showcases project introduces a new projection-based AR display system - the Virtual Showcase.
