The amount of digitally available audiovisual data in the form of streaming video is constantly growing. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly difficult to locate relevant videos that match specific interests. This leads to the need for universal and scalable multimedia content management systems. Essential resources of these systems are video metadata that describe certain video aspects and facilitate the access to video databases and the retrieval of relevant material. An adequate metadata management and intelligent personalization concepts play an increasingly important role. Major components of these management systems are tools that assist the easy and fast generation of video descriptions and a flexible framework that supports video access and retrieval using these descriptions. Since a variety of different application scenarios exist, both components should be adaptive to support application specific demands. With VIDETO and pViReSMo, two systems are currently being developed by the ZGDV Rostock to support access to streaming video.
