Several high-profile speakers talked about environmental protection issues at the annual general meeting of the American Iron & Steel Institute in Chicago in May. The theme for the program was "Steel: The Environmental Material of Choice." Let us be clear on one point: we are not taking sides in the intramural marketing competition among metals within the metalproducing industry. We mention this meeting specifically because it gave us an opportunity to listen to Carol Browner, administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. As a luncheon speaker, she talked about the Clinton administration's environmental strategy. Of particular interest to the audience was her update on the Common Sense Initiative (CSI).
